Learning To Fly
A poem about a breakthrough

The heaviness of my heart,
what seemed like a burden
weighed me down through
the years is gone.
Just like that, I’m free.
Focusing on the future
is a thousand times better than
focusing on the past.
It’s a feeling of longing
for a vision of life instead
of a person or an event.
Close your eyes if you
want to see stars, to feel love,
and to taste life.
You have the power to construct
your own reality.
When you feel the energy of
real love, the kind that is not
trapped in a song or a poem,
or in present memories, you
feel action at your fingertips
in every moment of the day.
You stop settling and start
trusting that what is waiting
for you is not of your imagination.
You have no idea how it’s going
to turn out.
Your life will be greater than the
life of words that you’ve built.
Your love of syllables can transform
people, places, and lives into improved
versions of god’s reflections.
When you choose to truly live beyond
the confines of your imagination,
you take flight.
You learn that hurts, stumbles, pains
are clearing the road for smooth
travels.
You celebrate the beauty of those
who will stay, guide, and nurture
you.
When they ground you,
you know that you are not alone.
You feel the love that you are
always meant to feel.
You embody it and pass it on
to the world around you.
In living generously,
you start to build a life that you always
wanted, the one that only trusting
with blind folds on, scared shitless,
can allow you to attain.
You fly, soaring, unabashedly
into the unknown of this colorful
universe.
You are in the driver’s seat.
This poem was inspired by Jason Mraz’s song: Have it all.
Here’s the section of lyrics that really inspired me:
Well here’s to the hearts that you’re gonna break
Here’s to the lives that you’re gonna change
Here’s to the infinite possible ways to love you
I want you to have it
Here’s to the good times we’re gonna have
You don’t need money, you got a free pass
Here’s to the fact that I’ll be sad without you
I want you to have it all
