What does it say that not a lot of statisticians are getting hired as data scientists? I believe that real world data needs people with business skills to understand. On top of that someone who’s analyzing the data needs to do so with comfort in ambiguity. That ambiguity is often something that statisticians who champion “methods” have trouble with. (I myself had trouble with this.) It’s taking me quite a few years to overcome that.
